  • Item 17 – Approve design plan for Civic Center

The Fairgrounds is a large area of land proposed for down Rt 160 by the racetrack. The Board voted to pass the project prior to my term beginning.

Wednesday there was a vote to approve a specific design for a “Civic Center” that will be built on this land.

One of my objections to building this area was the ability of homeless to camp on the site. Since the Grants Pass U.S. Supreme Court ruling from last year decided that local communities can ban overnight camping, the likelihood of the Fairgrounds project to become a homeless camping center can be stopped if we can pass an overnight camping ban.

I did not cast a vote on this plan because the Civic Center was not my project, I didn’t vote for it, and it made no sense for me to weigh in a project I never wanted.

  • Item 18 – Funding for anti-ICE police program (Sanctuary County program)

Funding for a program called FASTT/MOST. This program is intended to divert criminals away from law enforcement and into the care of social workers.

My objection is that this creates a de facto Sanctuary County out of Nye County in the very likely event that illegal aliens are “diverted” away from custody of the sheriff’s office and into those who run this program.

I directly questioned the person who manages the program and he told me that he has never reported an illegal alien and would have to defer to whomever is his supervisor should he be faced with the problem of knowing one of the criminals he has diverted away from police came into his care.

Every criminal arrested by Nye County sheriff deputies is checked with ICE. Any criminal diverted away under FASTT/MOST will not be reported to ICE.
